The Warner Brothers / Stanley Kubrick film ‘Eyes Wide Shut’ seemed to strike a chord with many people particularly the film’s masked ball orgy sequence and its rousing musical scores and its psycho-sexual effects. The use of masks to conceal one’s identity and the visions of masked girls in heels and cloaks seemed to release the ‘primal’ side within many people. The film was also a reminder of the historical French and Italian Masquerades, many of which included tales of erotic experimentation and the anonymity provided by wearing masks.
In a scene involving a bizarre sex ritual of the extremely wealthy and powerful, a viewer can identify with Tom Cruise’s character. There is an overwhelming sense of foreboding and uncertainty that accompanies the proceedings as they are controlled by a pope-like figure.
Kubrick’s intentions for that part of the film were unclear. Was he suggesting that a controlling moral code is needed to maintain order in society (reinforcing that metaphor with the subsequent death of one of the undisciplined prostitutes)? Or was he suggesting that religious morality sets standards which benefit the rich and powerful at the expense of ordinary people, and that it was completely hypocritical (reinforcing that by showing the differing types of ‘depravity’ and organized religion’s apparent condoning of immoral acts by “the right people”)? This ambiguity is a common element in Kubrick films, one which provokes endless discussion as to the “meaning” of his films.
‘Eyes Wide Shut’ is like a Rorschach blot; what you see and how you react to it depends to a large extent on your own experiences. The inexperienced will only see a bizarre cast of characters doing extremely wierd things, punctuated by a few hot sex scenes, the more mature viewer will see much more.
As a film though it was slated for it’s plot flaws and inconclusiveness, nonetheless, those who were turned on by it seem to use it as a source of sexual fantasy, but also want to bring it into reality and taste its delightful decadence and naughtiness.
